  • World of Nuts and Ice Cream: 6th Avenue
Description: This "hole-in-the-wall" candy shop next to the Astro restaurant (103 W 55th St. or 1361 6th Ave, New York, NY)specializes in novelty confectionary items, such as white-chocolate coated pretzels and various kinds of gummy animals in clear lucite drawers. However, they have an ice cream counter where they sell a line of low fat ice cream. I had the coffee flavor, and I am glad to report that it certainly does not have the chemical or weak flavor one usually associates with low-fat ice cream. Theirs was an unusual offering for a coffee flavored ice cream: it was a "coffee and cookies" flavor with chocolate syrup and bits of chocolate cake or cookie embedded in the ice cream. I am happy to report that the baked-goods bits were not dry, flavorless, or stale as they so often are in commercially made ice creams and low-end parlors. At $2.37 for a small cup, it may seem a little on the expensive side but it is worth it. Reviewed by Laura Brose c. 2006.
