Description: Review of Theresa's Cafe and Ices 1298 Crosby Avenue
Laura Brose c. 2007
Theresa's Cafe is a little shop with a little bit of everything: it has scant interior space with seating at two tables with high chairs. An umbrella and some plastic chairs comprise the outdoor seating area. The big pink ice cream cone sign is quite striking and leaves you no doubt that you have come to the right place.
The cafe offers a selection of handmade cream ices as well as conventional ice cream, and previously unbeknownst to me, it is also a "lunch restaurant" as well as an ice cream parlor and a coffeehouse. They sell espresso, cappuccino, and a selection of Italian pastries. Signs bedeck the busy and jam-packed interior, proclaiming that they serve hot dogs as well as panini, heroes, and pasta. Sometimes all these food catagories intersect: A specialty item offered here is the ice cream filled cannoli shell, which comes readymade, packed with vanilla or chocolate ice cream, and with your choice of sprinkles or chocolate chips, for $3.00. Another case of the disparate food categories crossing boundaries is the Cafe's Cappuccino Chill Drink, which consists of vanilla ice cream, coffee, ice cubes and cinnamon, topped with whipped cream. It comes in several flavors: Baci (chocolate hazelnut), mocha, carmel, white mocha, chocolate raspberry, and vanilla raspberry. They all sound good enough to motivate me to make another visit!
Perhaps because the interior is too small to hold a lot of people, Theresa's Cafe provides "Make Your Own Sundae" catering service for childrens' parties at the home, rather than in the shop.
Two old ladies came in while I was eating my cannoli. One was bringing her friend for the first time. They were chatting, and the new customer said; "My first time in here, I like what I see".
The competition consists of a Baskin-Robbins shop in the area and the Family Pizzeria and Restaurant, which offers "Real Homemade Italian Ices".
Getting there:Subway: 6 train to Pelham Bay Park, plus the Bx 8 bus if you don't want a long walk.
